| If you’ve been told, “You have prediabetes,” you may have walked out of your doctor’s office with more questions than answers. Maybe you were told to lose weight, eat better, exercise more, or make some lifestyle changes. But what does that actually mean? Where do you start? And how do you turn all of that advice into changes you can actually live with? To help you answer those questions, I’m refocusing my work right now on metabolic health and Type 2 diabetes prevention, and I’m running a new workshop: My Doctor Said I Have Prediabetes. Now What? But before we get into the details on that… A New Chapter for Wellness in a Chaotic World It’s been a few months since I’ve published a new episode of Wellness in a Chaotic World. Over the past several months, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on where I want to focus as a health coach and how I want to support people on their wellness journeys. I’ve also been enjoying summer, spending time with family, taking care of my own health, and allowing myself some space after completing my health coach training and stepping more fully into this work. That space has been valuable because it brought me back to the heart of why I started Wellness in a Chaotic World in the first place. There’s already so much information coming at us about what we should eat, how we should move, what routines we should follow, and what we need to do to be healthier. I don’t want to add more noise to that. I want to help people find practical, sustainable ways to care for themselves—ways that fit their actual lives, reflect their values, and support where they want to go. And that has brought me back to a question that I think is incredibly important: How do we close the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it? Why Type 2 Diabetes Prevention is Personal for Me Diabetes has affected many members of my family. I grew up in the 80s watching my mom navigate type 2 diabetes, along with all the confusing and often unhelpful diet advice of that era. I watched her frustration with weight management up close, long before I understood how much that experience would shape my own perspective on health. My own health journey eventually became part of that story, too. In my early 40s, I was dealing with chronic inflammation, joint pain, digestive issues, and changes in my weight. As I started exploring what was contributing to how I felt, I learned more about the connection between nutrition, movement, lifestyle habits, and overall well-being. That journey ultimately led me to become a health coach. But one of the most important things I’ve learned isn’t about nutrition or exercise. It’s about change itself. Lasting change isn’t about finding the perfect plan or having more willpower. It’s about understanding yourself, reconnecting with what matters to you, and making choices that fit your life. And that’s where I believe there’s an opportunity to do something different. When Knowing What to Do Isn’t Enough Most of us already know some of the things we’re “supposed” to do to take better care of ourselves. We know that eating more nutritious foods can be beneficial. We know movement matters. We know sleep matters. We know stress affects our well-being. But knowing those things doesn’t automatically make them easy to do. Life gets in the way. Schedules change. We’re tired. We’re stressed. Our families have needs. We travel. We celebrate. We get sick. We fall out of routines. And sometimes the advice we’re given is so broad that we don’t even know what to tackle first. That’s especially true when you’re told you have prediabetes. Prediabetes Can Be a Confusing Moment A prediabetes diagnosis can be scary. You may understand that your blood sugar is higher than it should be and that you want to do something about it. But you may still be left wondering what, exactly, you’re supposed to do. Should you completely change the way you eat? Do you need to lose a certain amount of weight? How much exercise is enough? Do you have to give up foods you enjoy? What changes actually matter? And perhaps most importantly: How am I supposed to make all of this work in my actual life? You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight. You don’t need to become a completely different person by the next morning. And you don’t need another overwhelming list of rules. You need a place to start. You need to be able to identify the changes that make sense for you, figure out what might get in the way, and experiment with ways to make those changes part of your everyday life. That’s the work I’m interested in. From Information to Action I’m not suggesting that information isn’t important. It is. We need good information to make informed decisions about our health. But information is only one part of the equation. The real challenge often begins after we’ve learned what we “should” do. How do we actually do it? How do we move from intention to action? How do we make a healthier choice when we’re tired and stressed? How do we recover when we get off track, rather than deciding we’ve failed? How do we build habits that work with our lives rather than creating another set of expectations we can’t maintain? Those are behavior-change questions. And they’re the questions I want to explore more deeply through my work. Now, back to that workshop…My Doctor Said I Have Prediabetes. Now What? That’s why I’m hosting a free, interactive workshop on August 15 at 1:00 PM Eastern. The workshop is designed for people who have recently been diagnosed with prediabetes and aren’t sure what to do next. We’ll talk about what prediabetes actually means and practical first steps you can consider. My goal isn’t to hand you another overwhelming list of things you should be doing. It’s to help you leave feeling more informed, more confident, and clearer about where to start. If you’ve been sitting with a prediabetes diagnosis and thinking, “Okay…now what?” this workshop is for you. Learn more and register for the free workshop What’s next This workshop is a starting point for me, too. I’m continuing to explore how I can support people who want to improve their health and reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes—but who don’t necessarily need more information. They need help turning what they know into what they will actually do. That’s the space I want to keep exploring here at Wellness in a Chaotic World: sustainable behavior change, metabolic health, and the messy, very human process of taking care of ourselves in the middle of real life. Because wellness doesn’t happen in a perfect world. It happens in this one. |
